There are 3 color used in a ceiling fan wiring colors, to make it working. All 3 wires have their own and different works. So here we explain the working of all these wires.

Blue Wire: To control the power running to the light kit we use blue wire on a ceiling fan. And one thing more without connecting blue wire to the power source in your ceiling fan, You will not be able to control light in the ceiling fan.

Black Wire: On the same way the black wire is also reeserved for fan power and it doesn’t extend over to your light kit.

Before wiring a ceiling fan, you should know which wire in the ceiling fan is used for starting the light kit. And as the manner which is used for Running the light kit(coil) in ceiling fan. And which one is used as common wire.

To understand about Starting, Running And Common Light Kit wires, you need to check the resistance.

So using a resistance checking device you can distinguish between all the light kit wires. Below we explain you can check there:

1. Starting Light Kit Wire

The resistance of starting light kit wire is always 287 ohm in a ceiling fan. When you connect resistance measuring device with 2 wires then their resistance is equals to 287 ohm that means one of them is starting wire and common light wire.


2. Running Light Kit wire

Running Coil

The resistance of running light kit wire is always 211 ohm in a ceiling fan. When you connect resistance measuring device with 2 wires then their resistance is equals to 211 ohm that means one of them is running wire and common light wire.


3. Common Light Kit wire


When we connect 2 wires from resistance measuring device then their resistance become 498 ohm. Then these wires are starting and running light kit wire. So that the remaining wire is common wire.


Blue Wire Ceiling Fan – Where Does The Blue Wire Go On A Ceiling Fan?

The placement of the blue wire depends on whether you plan on having your ceiling fan controlled by one or two switches.  For single switch ceiling fans, you’ll be sharing the switch with the black ceiling fan wire. When connecting your ceiling fan to two separate wall switches, both the blue and black ceiling fan wires are connected to their own separate switches.

1. Single Switch Ceiling Fan Wiring


If you want to turn on your fan, from only a single wall switch. You need to follow these steps. And you also understood the whole diagram which we mention below:

Step – 1. Connect the ceiling fan blue wire to both the black fan wire and the black wire from the ceiling. This connection allows both the ceiling fan and light kit to be powered by a single light switch.

Step – 2. Grounding wires are to be connected together. These wires are commonly green, yellow or bare copper.

Step – 3. Finally, the white wires from the ceiling and fan are connected together. Turn the power back on and test the fan.


Dual Switch Ceiling Fan Wiring


A duel switch arrangement lets you manage the fan and lighting power on switches. Unlike the switch wiring installation above, the wire on the ceiling fan is directly closely attached with it’s own on / off switch. The basic idea is that each switch feeds either the black wire for the fan power or blue wire from the light kit.

This connection will let you regulate the fan power.

  • Connect the black ungrounded wire from the ceiling to the black wire from the fan. This connection will allow you to control the fan power from the first switch.
  • The blue wire from the ceiling fan gets connected to the second live wire from the ceiling. This second wire can vary in color but is most commonly red or black.
  • This connection allows you to power your lights from the second switch.
  • This wire may vary in color but can be black or red. This connection enables you to power your lights. Join the whitened cushioned wire from the ceiling into the white wire from the fan.
  • Last, make certain all of your wires from the ceiling fan and ceiling are all attached together. You will find 3 milling wires which can fluctuate in color. Even the most usual grounding wire colors are yellow, green and bare copper.
