The Personal Chef Industry

Personal Chef WendyPrior to 1992 and the launch of the United States Personal Chef Association, the Department of Labor Statistics had the number of personal chefs/household cooks at less than 5,000 and generally employed by wealthy individuals. With the creation of a Personal Chef Service in 1987 by the husband and wife team of David MacKay and Susan Titcomb-MacKay, the definition of the Personal Chef was destined to change.

The introduction in 1992, of the United States Personal Chef Association, the first and only trade association exclusively for the Personal Chef, ushered in a new era in culinary arts. Suddenly there were Personal Chef Services owned by Personal Chefs focusing on Middle America while private chefs/household cooks were still employed by generally wealthy individuals.

In 1996, as the industry was beginning to grow, the United States Personal Chef Institute (the educational division of the USPCA) was created to develop and standardize the educational requirements necessary to earn the title of Personal Chef as well as establish the certification standards necessary for the continued growth of the industry. Today, according to the Department of Labor, the number of private chefs/household cooks has remained constant at about 5,000 while the number of Personal Chef Service businesses has grown to over 5,000 in a short 10 years.

The Certified Personal Chef designation is now federally recognized and Personal Chef Service courses are being taught in major culinary arts programs. The United States Personal Chef Association, as the acknowledged leader, has been the driving force behind the many changes in the industry and continues today, as the largest Personal Chef organization in the world and the only organization to have a national as well as regional offices.
